Rules: April 12, 1961

RONDELET BEER-BIKE RACE

I. COURSE

The Rondelet Beer-Bike Race shall be run this year over the traditional campus course. The start and finish will be at a point directly in front of Hamman Hall on the street running between the Biology Building and Student Memorial Center.

II. JUDGES

Judges are to be selected by the Beer-Bike Committee and shall assess appropriate penalties for rule infractions during the race. They shall be five in number: one judge per college and one head judge.

III. PENALTIES

All the penalties will be applied as a delay between the rider's pit entrance and the beer drinker's start, in order to save confusion. Judges' decisions are final.

  1. Beer drinking - Penalties of 5 seconds will be assessed for:
    1. Failing to drink all the beer (spilling, choking)
    2. Starting to drink before the judge has signalled to begin
    3. Hindering in any way other entered teams
  2. Bicycle riding - Penalties of 10 seconds shall be assessed for:
    1. Having more than one bike in the pit during the race
    2. Going over the starting line before the judge has signalled to begin
    3. Having more than 3 crew men in the pit (other than the actual rider and the succeeding rider) at any one time
    4. Hindering in any way other entered teams

IV. PRACTICE REGULATIONS

These regulations are necessary as safety precautions in order to keep the inherent danger to a minimum. The future of the Bike Race may depend on their observation and enforcement.

  1. Practice shall be limited to the stadium parking lot only until Thursday, April 20.
  2. Practice along the actual course shall be absolutely restricted to authorised practice sessions; that is, 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., April 20-28, under the conditions of (3) below. Note that no night riding will be allowed.
  3. Practice on the course itself will be subject to the following safety conditions. The safety crew shall consist of five men posted as follows: Student Center corner, tennis courts corner, Lovett Hall intersections, library lot entrance, and Outer Belt intersection. The safety crew shall be provided with warning flags and shall warn all traffic and direct it counterclockwise if possible. Signs shall be provided to be placed at all points of entrance to the course. Each college will be responsible for safety crew and signs for a day in its turn.
  4. Penalties for infractions of practice regulations shall be:
    1. Individual infractions - Suspension of the individual from the race.
    2. Team Infractions - Time penalty in the race as decided by committee.

V. PHYSICAL ARRANGEMENTS

  1. Pits shall be 100 feet in length and be divided into lanes for which lots shall be drawn. Pit crews shall have colored arm bands or otherwise have their positions indicated.
  2. The race course shall be blocked to all traffic for the race itself.
  3. In the event a bicycle breaks down during the race the rider may either finish the race on foot along the regular course, or return to the pit where he may begin the lap again on an extra bicycle which may be stationed near the pit but not inside. Only under such emergency conditions may this second bicycle be brought into the race.
  4. Ropes shall be used to keep spectators from the immediate area of the pits and drinkers. Spectator cooperation is urged.
